An adventurous 36-year old Indian-American who navigated glaciers and volcanoes before taking to developmental work was thrown into the political cauldron in Washington DC on Thursday in what is purportedly the highest federal government position occupied by a person of Indian origin in the US.
Times of India reports on Rajiv Shah’s appointment as chief of USAID.
Times also notes that:
Shah, who is a graduate of University of Michigan, earned his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School and his Master of Science in health economics at the Wharton School of Business. He also attended the London School of Economics before becoming a policy wonk, variously working at the World Health Organisation, advising the Gore 2000 presidential campaign on health care policy, and most recently, before joining the Obama administration, serving as Director for Agricultural Development at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
While several Indian-Americans have served at the level of Assistant Secretary in administrations starting with the President Clinton’s, Shah became the highest-ranked last year as Under Secretary of Agriculture before being bumped up to USAID administrator, which is a sub-cabinet level job.
