Living Upto Our Children’s Expectations…..

President Obama at Tucson:

I believe we can be better.  Those who died here, those who saved lives here – they help me believe.  We may not be able to stop all evil in the world, but I know that how we treat one another is entirely up to us.  I believe that for all our imperfections, we are full of decency and goodness, and that the forces that divide us are not as strong as those that unite us.

That’s what I believe, in part because that’s what a child like Christina Taylor Green believed.  Imagine: here was a young girl who was just becoming aware of our democracy; just beginning to understand the obligations of citizenship; just starting to glimpse the fact that someday she too might play a part in shaping her nation’s future.  She had been elected to her student council; she saw public service as something exciting, something hopeful.  She was off to meet her congresswoman, someone she was sure was good and important and might be a role model.  She saw all this through the eyes of a child, undimmed by the cynicism or vitriol that we adults all too often just take for granted.

I want us to live up to her expectations.  I want our democracy to be as good as she imagined it.  All of us – we should do everything we can to make sure this country lives up to our children’s expectations….

If there are rain puddles in heaven, Christina is jumping in them today. And here on Earth, we place our hands over our hearts, and commit ourselves as Americans to forging a country that is forever worthy of her gentle, happy spirit.

To Christina,:who made history with the very first breath and with the last!  GOD BLESS YOU!!

How Lucky Am I?

After being away for a fortnight, I came home to this note from my son…

He came home early from our holiday and left this note for me! Upon his arrival he also noticed that our neighbours had taken good care of our house and left a note taped to their front door thanking them for the help. I am so grateful and proud to my son!! I feel like I am on top of the whole world!!

With blessings like this who would mind this ..?

My front yard at 4am this morning. It took me 20 minutes to shovel off the walkway in front of mine & my neighbour’s house (favour duly returned)!!

Long Trek For A Short But Sweet Visit

I enjoy making plans! All who know me will gladly and readily vouch for that. I mostly succeed but on occasions even my best laid-out plans turn dud.

So  when British Airways cancelled all its flights into Heathrow airport on 19Dec2010, I was itsy- bitsy short of going………

Some of my friends encouraged me to keep checking for alternatives, some were reminding me of my great fortune at not being stranded at some airports while some others were coaxing me to cancel my trip all together and try again in 2011. So what ended up happening..?

Here is my diary…

Delayed flight here at Toronto

I reached Toronto airport at 2.45pm for my  6:25pm flight to Brussels. But now they don’t know when the flight will even take off from Brussels and fly into Toronto. Will keep you posted. Toronto really loves me and does not want to let me go even for a holiday. Ummm Dubai turns a sour face and Toronto clings to me! The joy of travel!

It is 11:25pm at Toronto…

..estimated time of departure is now at 1.30am. And I’ve just been told that my Chennai connection at Brussels would not wait for this flight from Toronto, so I am being re-routed to Delhi. From there they have given me a local jet-flight to Chennai. Hoping to reach Chennai on time for my 2:10pm flight to Coimbatore, else next option is 7:25pm. I am really a true-global-traveller this trip. I still have 2 more hours here, hoping I don”t get routed to Singapore or New Zealand within the next 2 hrs. Ha,ha,ha

It is now 4pm in Brussels..

..And my flight to Delhi leaves at 5pm. Will need to make thru customs in time at Delhi to catch my Chennai flight at 2:30pm to Coimbatore. If I don’t make it on time to the connecting flt, my next flight to Coimbatore is at 7:25pm. Hoping to hit my bed in Coimbatore on Sunday night at the least. But all in all it has been an interesting few months since Sep , but one that I would not care to repeat. Will update next from Delhi.

It is now 10:10am at Delhi

.. My Chennai flt was to be at 10:30 am, but there is no one at the gate yet. There was zero visibility due to fog at Delhi while landing. Fog seems to be causing more delay. I am not sure if I will make it to the 2:30 flt to Coimbatore, keeping my fingers crossed. Rest after reaching Chennai

It is 6pm in Chennai and ..

I did miss my 2:10 flt to Coimbatore. Next choice was 7:15pm but it is totally FULL. So they put me into a Kingfisher flight also leaving at 7:25pm. I WILL sleep in my parents house tonight, yeahhhh!!  Thanks to you both, JMS and GB for holding my hands thru my lon…..g journey. Much appreciated! Have a lovely New Year!

My 24 hours journey back home took me 42 hours, but the joy on my parents face when they saw me... priceless and timeless!!
