Only In USA…

……..day in and day out all kinds of senseless, horrific news comes to light. But I think this kind of insanity erupts nowhere else other than the ‘Greatest’ nation on earth.

1: New Hampshire state law is pretty clear about protecting its citizens’ rights to carry firearms in public. Carrying a pistol or revolver openly is permitted without a license; carrying a concealed weapon requires a license from the state or local police.

William Kostric took advantage of that law on Tuesday to show up outside President Obama’s Portsmouth, N.H. town hall meeting and hold a sign saying “It Is Time To Water The Tree Of Liberty.” That invokes a phrase from a letter written by Thomas Jefferson: “The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”

2: George Tiller, a Kansas physician, was shot to death in church on Sunday. He was one of only a handful of doctors in the United States providing late-term therapeutic abortions for women in need – women whose pregnancies threatened their lives or their health, and women who learned that they were carrying foetuses with severe abnormalities. Women travelled across the country to see Tiller when their own physicians and local medical providers couldn’t help them. For many women, Tiller was, as one of his patients put it, “the one shining light in the worst week of my life”.

3: Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot in the head Saturday when an assailant opened fire outside a grocery store during a meeting with constituents, killing six people and wounding 13 others.

4: A Florida man killed himself last night after opening fire at a school board meeting.

5: An Indianapolis man convicted of a fatal mass shooting at a birthday party in 2010 was sentenced Wednesday. Damion Martin sentenced to 135 years in prison after being found guilty of first and second-degree murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, aggravated battery and three counts of battery.

6: The fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman took place on February 26, 2012, in Sanford, Florida, United States. Trayvon Martin was a 17-year-old African American teenager who was unarmed. George Zimmerman, a 28-year-old multi-racial Hispanic American, was the designated neighborhood watch coordinator for The Retreat at Twin Lakes, the gated community where the shooting took place

and now the most horrific……

7: Aurora Shooting: 71 shot in movie theater during ‘Dark Knight Rises’ premiere……

Only in USA….where inspite of repeated such instances no one (yes Mr. President, I am pointing at you too) dares to talk about ‘gun control’.
…..where a person’s Second Amendment ‘right to bare arms’ is treated more preciously than a person’s right to:
-> visit a movie-theater, a school, an university, a museum, a church, a grocery-store,
-> take a walk and just basically live……

As Adam Gopnik writes:

Only in America. Every country has, along with its core civilities and traditions, some kind of inner madness, a belief so irrational that even death and destruction cannot alter it. In Europe not long ago it was the belief that “honor” of the nation was so important that any insult to it had to be avenged by millions of lives. In America, it has been, for so long now, the belief that guns designed to kill people indifferently and in great numbers can be widely available and not have it end with people being killed, indifferently and in great numbers. The argument has gotten dully repetitive: How does one argue with someone convinced that the routine massacre of our children is the price we must pay for our freedom to have guns, or rather to have guns that make us feel free? You can only shake your head and maybe cry a little. “Gun Crazy” is the title of one the best films about the American romance with violence. And gun-crazy we remain.

And as John Cole posts at Balloonjuice:

It occurred to me tonight that we live in a country where the Supreme Court has decided the 1st amendment does not give you the right to yell “fire” in a crowded movie theatre, but the 2nd Amendment gives you an unfettered right to amass enough guns to shoot 71 people in the same theatre.
No wonder Europeans think Americans are fucking stupid.

For all those affected by this senseless act………..
