Last week was a trip to Amrtisar. JK and I along with a friend’s family took time off to go visit HARMANDIR SAHIB (popularly known as the GOLDEN TEMPLE) at Amritsar. Have heard a lot about this place including words like serenity, love, awe and so on.
Sri Harmandir Sahib is considered holy by Sikhs. The most holy text of Sikhism, the Guru Granth Sahib (the holy book of Sikhs) is always present inside the Gurdwara. Built in 1604 and then renovated with time and the main temple complex is covered with gold. Over 100,000 people visit the holy shrine daily for worship. There is Langar (free food served in all Gurudwaras) 24 hours of the day in a kitchen that is manned by volunteers only. A must visit place and a must enjoy both Harmandir Sahib and the Langar.
Have seen places like Tirupathi with equal wealth and crowd. What amazed me about this place was the CLEANLINESS in the whole complex. AMAZING. Did not see any one actually cleaning the floors all the time (as you do in many public places in India). Yet there was not a speck of dust around. People were walking all over the place. Construction work going on outside the complex and yet so clean. We happened to be there on a full moon day in the evening. What a sight – With the moon in the background and the temple in the middle of a small lake gold glistening.
While most people would have been stuck with the beauty of the place, I was overcome with a strange set of feelings looking at the cleanliness. What does it need for one to maintain cleanliness? Looking around I did not see anyone throwing anything around. People were disciplined. Offerings in terms of food at the temple were being sold by the temple authorities inside the temple and I believe that led to people not bringing in their own packets and covers. And then as I was walking around the lake my mind wandered off to think of all the cleanliness that we can have – CLEANLINESS OF SURROUNDINGS, CLEANLINESS OF THOUGHT, CLEANLINESS OF THE MIND, and CLEANLINESS OF THE HEART.
What does it need for an individual to have all these cleanliness? What would I not give to have all these cleanliness in life? It is so simple. Clear thought, Love and Respect for your neighbor, treating everyone with equality, appreciating small things that are happening around you. Oh! I can go on listing all the stuff that went through my mind there. I wish people would treat this world as HARMANDIR SAHIB (Or their most favorite place of worship), treat every individual as their own, respect the law as if it were their holy book and respect the feelings of others with the same respect as theirs. I am sure we would have a world that is CLEAN IN HEART, CLEAN IN MIND, CLEAN IN THOUGHT and CLEAN ALL AROUND. Oh! What would I not give to see this happen!
